The five-time champion Chennai Super Kings stand second on this list as they are undoubtedly the most successful team in IPL because they have the better win percentage.

Given CSK’s suspension from the Indian Premier League in 2016 and 2017, the Mumbai Indians have played more matches than their rivals, the Chennai Super Kings, in the IPL. However, Rohit Sharma and Co. have still won just 54.40% of their matches.
Mumbai is one of the most successful teams not only in the IPL but also if you look at other franchise leagues. Mumbai Indians won the IPL title first in 2013, then in 2015, before their third IPL title came in 2017. They added two more to that list in 2019 and 2020, including many matches played in the UAE. All those titles have come under the astute leadership of Rohit Sharma.

While Chennai Super Kings lag behind Mumbai Indians in the tally of wins, the erstwhile MS Dhoni-led side has been one of the most consistent teams in the tournament. CSK has played 239 matches with 138 wins in the IPL tournament and a winning percentage 57.74.
CSK has been the dominating force since the inception of the IPL. They were the first team to win the title of the IPL in 2010, and since then, they have five titles: 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023. All these titles have been won under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. Before the 2024 season, Dhoni resigned as the captain, and the baton was passed to Ruturaj Gaikwad. They have more titles than Mumbai Indians.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) | Matches: 253 | Won 130
Three-time IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders are the third most successful team in the IPL. They sit third on the list of IPL match wins with 130 victories in 252 matches, enjoying a win percentage 51.58. KKR is the first team and the lone IPL side to record 10 consecutive wins within the tournament, which they achieved in the 2014-15 IPL season. In the leadership of Gautam Gambhir, KKR clinched the IPL title twice: in 2012 and 2014.
Then came a massive lull, which saw them going without an IPL trophy for nine years. In 2024 came, a change when KKR brought Gautam Gambhir back as a mentor. The move worked, and under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy, KKR won another IPL title in 2024.
Royal Challengers Bangalore(RCB) | Matches 256 | Won 121
One of the most followed and celebrated teams in the Indian Premier League, Royal Challengers Bangalore, have never won the IPL and has mostly ended their IPL campaigns in the league stages despite boasting of players like Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, Chris Gayle, and more in their side. RCB have won 121 matches of the 256 games they have played in IPL.
Although RCB did not win an IPL title, they are still one of the most successful teams in the IPL. They have a huge and loyal fan base, and an extensive support network, and they will win an IPL trophy in the future.
Delhi Capitals(DC)| Matches 252 | Won 112
The Delhi team was earlier known as Delhi Daredevils (DD), whose record was abysmal. DD held the record for most consecutive defeats in one season of IPL (9) in 2014. DD is also the team to lose 11 wins in a row, which is the most consecutive defeat by any team in IPL. But since 2019, Delhi Capitals has made the playoffs in most seasons and currently stands fifth on the list of IPL teams with most wins.
They reached the final of the IPL in 2020 for the first time, and though Mumbai defeated them, they have been an aggressive team in the last few years. Overall, the Capitals have played 252 games and have emerged victorious in 112.
Rajasthan Royals(RR) | Matches 222 | Won 110
RR won the inaugural edition of the IPL but could not do much for the next 10-12 years. They were also embroiled in the controversy and banned for two years in 2015 and 2016. However, the Royals’ fortunes have improved since getting Kumar Sangakkara on board and having Sanju Samson as captain.
In 2023, they qualified for the final of the IPL, while in 2024, they were one of the better sides in the tournament.
Punjab Kings(PBKS) | Matches 246 | Won 109
Another IPL franchise similar to RCB, who have always had a glittering side but never lived up to the promise. While Delhi Capitals changed their name from Kings XI Punjab to Punjab Kings, it didn’t help the team. PBKS has never won the IPL and has only qualified for the playoffs twice in the last 17 seasons of the IPL. Punjab has won only 109 games in 246 IPL matches.
Constant chopping and changing have affected the Punjab Kings big time, and they are nowhere they should have been despite playing in the IPL since the inaugural season.
Sunrisers Hyderabad(SRH)| Matches 182 | Won 87
Sunrisers Hyderabad is one of the newer teams of the IPL, which was established only in 2013. They have played 182 matches and won 87 of them. In 2016, Sunrisers were crowned champions after they got the better of RCB in the final.
They had a lull but managed to qualify for the final of the 2024 IPL, where they lost to KKR.
Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants: Two New Teams of IPL
Formed only in 2023, Gujarat Titans had a grandstand start to their tournament when they won the IPL title in their inaugural season, defeating Royals in the final. On the other hand, Lucknow Super Giants have not won the IPL but have been consistent.
